ABSTRACT

Abstract This study was developed at the intersection of health sciences and anthropology in order to understand the value of traditional Afro-Brazilian Medicine portrayed in houses of Candomblé exploring its member's interactions with the biomedical system of health. The anthropology of health aims to understand the phenomenon of health as a socio-cultural elaboration and from this, develops the notion of cultural health system, the theoretical operator of this study. This proposal can contribute to the challenges faced in the field of collective health by enabling dialogue between cultural health systems, supporting the creation of more effective policies. This ethnographic-inspired article was developed from a specific bibliographic survey, followed by participant observations and interviews with members of the community Ilé Alákétu Asè Ifá Omo Oyá, located in São Paulo. The health practice in candomblé manages to reach gaps left by biomedicine by associating itself in a non-authoritarian, colonialist or exclusive way taking into account the symbolic, cultural, subjective and spiritual processes involved in the processes of illness. This practice brings other possible ways of interpretation, treatment and cure for health problems.

ABSTRACT

Background: Brihat Khadir Batika (BKD) and Chandraprabha Batika (CPB) are Ayurvedic preparations used as traditional medicines for different clinical indications in the rural population. BKD is used in diseases of throat and CPB is used in glandular enlargement. In this study we evaluate the influence of these preparations on HbA1c (%) level. Methods: To find out the average plasma glucose concentration over prolonged period of time, Ayurvedic medicinal preparations BKD and CPB were administered chronically to the male Sprague-Dawley rats at a dose of 400 mg/kg. After 28 days of chronic administration of BKD and CPB the following changes were noted. In this experiment Glycated Hemoglobin A1C level was determined. Results: The results of the study of in vitro quantitative determination of rat Glycated hemoglobin A1c concentrations in serum studies are thus: BKD caused a statistically insignificant (p=0.066) increase in the HbA1c level of the male rat (16.87% increase). CPB demonstrated a statistically insignificant (p=0.079) (17.47%) increase in the HbA1C level of the blood of the male rat. Conclusions: Both preparation BKD and CPB found in increasing HbA1c level of the blood of the male rat.

ABSTRACT

Ischemic stroke has the characteristics of high morbidity and high mortality, which seriously endanger human health.According to the statistics, ischemic stroke in China accounts for about 80% of stroke cases, and its mortality rate is as high as 50%, but most of the ischemic stroke patients who survive have sequelae, such as hemiplegia, aphasia and so on.In recent years, people have continuously studied the pathological cascade of ischemic stroke, and also achieved some good results in animal model experiments, however, the clinical results are not satisfactory. Nowadays, the better clinically effective therapeutic drug is tissue plasminogen activator, but due to the limited time window, only a small number of patients can apply this drug in time to achieve the effect. Therefore,it is essential to study drugs that are definitive and can benefit a large number of patients with ischemic stroke. The development of traditional medicines is not as fast as the development of new drugs. For ischemic stroke,we can also turn from the study of the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke to the study of traditional drugs for the endogenous neuroprotection of ischemic stroke, and look for effective targets for neuroprotection based on traditional medicine. The multi-targets and multi-effects for the acute and convalescent phases of ischemic stroke is a direction explored by researchers, which also provides some evidence for more effective drugs for the treatment of ischemic stroke.

ABSTRACT

Materia medica is the traditional medicine theory under the guidance of the traditional "medicine" science collectively. The toxicity theory of Chinese materia medica (CMM) is contained in the herbal theory of herbs, and the paradigm of hermeneutics is the guideline applied in writing the herbal literature. The form of the theory of toxicity is the result of the formation of mainstream of series of materia medica such as Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica. Its formation is the condensation under the conception of Never end in the Han Dynasty, which contains the medicinal properties, toxic and side effects, compatibility, and other complex oriented. The exploration of the traditional "do not die" medicinal part should return to the four gas and odor thickness of the account; the original part of improper medicine should belong to the control of the source of medicine; Special physical adverse drug reactions should not be attributed to toxicity, due to dose or improper use of the adverse reactions should be returned to the relevant state departments under the proposed project; Toxic classification criteria must be based on modern toxicology research while strictly limiting the dose and scope of application. This will help to re-build CMM safety and maximize the characteristics of CMM to the modern herbal medicine.

ABSTRACT

A controlled prospective study included 50 normal Swiss white mice and 62 patients with mild and moderate hypertension without blood lipid metabolic disorder were divided into two groups randomly. The control group: 31 patients treated by Caporil 25mg, two tablets twice daily, (at 12 hours intervals). The study group: 31 take a TT1 prescription daily within 28 days continuously. The result showed that: No acute toxicity from TT1 prescription on trial dose of white mice: 50g/kg. No side effects occur when the patient uses a TT1 prescription daily. No blood lipid metabolic disorder on mild and moderate hypertension patients. TT1 had clearly good efficacy on hypotension. This efficacy after two weeks treatment is less effective than Caporil 25mg, twice daily but equivalent with Caporil 25mg, twice daily after 4 weeks. Some symptoms such as dazzle, dizziness, headache, red face, red eyes, tightness on chest had improved by TT1 and it was much better than Caporil.
